Helena Moreno serves as Mayor of the City of New Orleans. Prior to her election as mayor in 2025, she served as President of the New Orleans City Council, where she had served since her first Council election in 2017. Before joining the City Council, Moreno represented District 93 in the Louisiana House of Representatives after being elected in 2010.
Before entering public service, Moreno was an award-winning investigative reporter for WDSU-TV in New Orleans and was part of a team awarded an Emmy for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina. Her work in public office has addressed economic opportunity, small business, public safety, criminal justice reform, gender equality, climate action, infrastructure, health care, early childhood education and services for vulnerable communities.
Moreno was born in Xalapa, Mexico, and moved to the United States as a child. She remains fluent in Spanish and holds a degree in Journalism from Southern Methodist University.
